Welcome to APEF

2016 Asia-Pacific Conference on Economics & Finance (APEF 2016), jointly organized by East Asia Research & East Asia Institute of Management & supported by BEFfore from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, will be held on the 27th and 28th July 2016 in Singapore. 

Will the current oil crisis and China market slowdown result in a global recession more brutal than 2008? What are the current top global economic challenges? APEF 2016 aims to achieve the following objectives:

  1. Increase the awareness of risk management in financial institutions. Unlike 2008, policy makers are not able to relieve pressure by cutting interest rates.
  2.  
  3. Share research and practical experience in implementing risk management to ensure a repeat of the Global financial meltdown (2008) can be avoided.
  4.  
  5. Discuss the impacts on the world economy from the current crisis.
  6.  
  7. Create opportunities for international research collaborations, scientific information interchange and facilitate relationship building in the Economics, Finance and Business disciplines.

          Keynote Speaker

          Dr. HUSZAR, Zsuzsa Reka

          Department of Finance at National University of Singapore (NUS)             Business School

Dr Zsuzsa R. Huszar is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Finance at National University of Singapore (NUS) Business School. She is also an affiliated researcher at the Institute of Real Estate Studies (IRES) and at the Risk Management Institute (RMI) at NUS. Prior to joining NUS, Dr Huszar was an Assistant Professor at California State Polytechnic University in Pomona and Instructor and Teaching Assistant at the University of Kentucky.

Dr Huszar`s research interests include short selling and pricing efficiency, financial liquidity risk, regulatory implications in the external capital market, and regulatory implications in the residential mortgage market. In her current research, she focuses on pricing implications of the equity lending market internationally, thereby contributing to the global regulatory debate on short selling. Her research work has been published in top finance and real estate journals, including the Journal of Financial Economics, Real Estate Economics and The Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics.

Dr Huszar has received number of awards for her studies and research. She was awarded the best paper (2010) by Fama-DFA, an annual prize given to authors with best capital markets and asset pricing research papers published in the Journal of Financial Economics.

          Dr. Evan Lau

          Associate Professor, Director of Centre for Business Economics &             Finance Forecasting (BEFfore), UNIMAS

Evan Lau is a well-trained Universiti Putra Malaysia graduate with vast experience and research excellence covering the areas of International Economics with numerous applications of econometrics techniques. Recently he ventured into socioeconomic discipline including Economics of Crime and Suicide. He joined Faculty of Economics and Business Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) in 2005 soon after completing his Ph.D in 2004. He servicing as a senior lecturer since 2008 and promoted to Associate Professor from June 2014 to date. He holds the Managing Editor post for International Journal of Business and Society (IJBS), an internationally refereed journal indexed in SCOPUS bibliographic database, Malaysian Citation Centre (MCC), ProQuest publisher, Ulrich’s Periodicals Directory, Cabell’s Directories (Economics, Finance and Management) and EBSCO Host Publishing. He is the director of Centre of Excellence for Business, Economics and Finance Forecasting (BEFfore), UNIMAS which among other serves as a platform and reference point for business, economic and finance forecasting. He was the Visiting Scholar in Faculty of Economics in University of Cambridge. He teaches both the undergraduates and the graduate courses.


          General Chair

          Dr. Tan Jing Hee

          Executive Director & Chairman of its Academic Board of East Asia             Institute of Management

Dr. Tan Jing Hee is an Executive Director of East Asia Institute of Management as well as the Chairman of its Academic Board. He started work as a Retail Manager in a family business dealing with pharmaceutical products, toiletries and film development and processing. Dr Tan went on to become Senior Science Master of a government secondary school. After five years, he re-joined the private sector as a Merchandising Manager of Robinsons Departmental Store, with responsibilities over 6 departments in Menswear Division. In 1973, he joined the Singapore Institute of Management, initially as Information, Publications and Research officer before moving into management development responsibilities. During his 25 years stay in the institute, he helped to build it into the premier HRD organisation in the region. While in SIM, Dr Tan was also involved in establishing enterprise-wide MBO systems in six medium and large organisations in Singapore. In 1987, he co-edited a book on Developing Managers In Asia, published by Addison-Wesley. Dr Tan was the Chief Operating Officer of SIM before leaving it to pursue other interests. In 1994, he wrote doctoral thesis on Developing A Factor Model of Management Work in Singapore, for which he was awarded his Ph.D from Henley Mangement College/Brunel University.
